Now Playing: What a Day!
The weekend of Feb 21 was off to a slow start when my mother caught a small notice in the Home section of our local paper that announced Patrick & Shirley’s joint appearance at Sun City SHADOW HILLS the following day. I tried calling 2 numbers, but then an internet article in the Palm Springs paper gave more details. I called that number, & left a message.
Sunday, the day of the show, I called again and explained that I was the President of the Cassidy Fan Club, and I understood that they said that it may be sold out, but I’d appreciate if they could squeeze me in. She called me back within 10 minutes & told us to come!
It was a 45-min drive, but we left early enough to do some shopping in the area. Shadow Hills is a beautiful community, similar to Sun Lakes (where both Shirley & Patrick had performed separately last year), and their show was a combination of the best of both acts. Patrick came out singing “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (interrupted by tapes of various members of his family), then followed with Jack’s song, “My Fortune is my Face,” “Til There Was You” (interspersed with the story of his mother’s pregnancy during the filming of Music Man). He substituted “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” for a song-filled chat with his pianist (he pulled friends from the audience to sing with him), and ended with “I’m Nothing Without You” with the mask of David, and Lullaby of Broadway. He also announced that filming on Ruby & the Rockits would start in June.
After a brief intermission, Shirley came out, wearing a turquoise pant suit, & sang all of her great songs, starting with “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy” from South Pacific, then Send In The Clowns (her best by far!) She vamped it up for The Man That Got Away & You Made Me Love You (coming into the audience to serenade some of the men) , and then went into a melody of songs from Oklahoma & Carousel.
She cut back on discussion on her family, & closed the show with 76 Trombones. Patrick came out & introduced “Trouble” as the “first rap song.” Shirley came out to reprise “Til There Was You” with Patrick as a closing duet.
The show ended at 5:30, & my parents wanted to get as close to home as possible before it got dark. I decided to pass photos I’d taken back-stage for autographs. The door opened & I heard Patrick’s voice saying “is she still out there?” The next thing I saw was Patrick himself coming out to pose for a photo with me. That man has to be one of the most gracious, generous performers I have ever met. Shirley emerged shortly after, & confirmed Lila’s birth (after 3 months of no word).
